It is our sad duty to inform the AU community that a former board member, and long-time friend of Athabasca University, has passed away. Dr. Herb Belcourt passed away July 5 after a long battle with cancer. He was one day shy of his 86th birthday.

In appreciation for his years of service on our board, Herb was awarded the Order of Athabasca University in 2006. Among his numerous other awards were an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Alberta, and he was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2010 in recognition of his untiring efforts to improve the lives of the Métis people.

Herb was a successful entrepreneur, founding several businesses, and he co-founded the Belcourt Brosseau Métis Award, a $13-million endowment that has so far given $6 million to more than 1,000 Métis students to continue their education.

We express our deepest sympathies to his wife, Lesley, and his family and many friends. Athabasca University remains deeply grateful to Herb and we will miss him dearly.
