A message from AU President Peter Scott on the escalating situation in Iran
We are deeply troubled by the recent events in Iran, sparked by the detainment and tragic death of Mahsa Amini. We recognize the profound impact this has had on Iranians, and the far-reaching impacts upon those in our community with ties to Iran.
At Athabasca University, our hearts are with Iranians in their pain and loss, and we stand united with them as they bravely defend human rights and freedoms. AU is a global community, and we are all impacted by harassment, repression, and escalating violence against women wherever it happens in the world.
The recent crackdown on peaceful protests in Iran, particularly against students and our academic colleagues, imperils education, academic freedom, and self-determination for all people. We are united with those around the globe calling on the government of Iran to stop these violent acts now.
During this turbulent time, we want AU students and team members to know that there is support available. AU team members can call the Employee and Family Assistance Program at 1-844-880-9137. Students can find mental health and wellness support through AU’s Support Services.
Please reach out during this difficult time should you need support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Peter Scott
President
