That’s a wrap on Athabasca University Convocation 2023!
Athabasca University’s (AU) first hybrid convocation ceremonies brought together graduates from across Canada and beyond to celebrate
Joined by friends, family, and even pets, on June 16, the AU community celebrated the 1,957 graduates from 40 programs who received degrees, diplomas, or certificates as part of the Class of 2023. We couldn’t be prouder!
AU’s first-ever hybrid convocation experience allowed grads to be part of a truly unique event. Hundreds celebrated at home as part of a virtual convocation ceremony, while hundreds more celebrated in person at the Edmonton EXPO Centre.
Grads networked with their professors and classmates and heard from 2023 Honorary Doctor of Letters recipient, Wanda Dalla Costa, Honorary Doctor of Science recipient, Dr. Austin Mardon, and the Governor General’s Academic Gold and Silver Medal winners.
New graduates also flipped their tassels from right to left and shared their proud successes on social media, and in some cases on the news!

So many messages of congrats!
Our grads not only inspire us but also the people around them. We asked their families, friends, and AU faculty and staff to share congratulations on a virtual message board and the response was heartwarming!
Sharing the moment
The Class of 2023, their family, friends, and the rest of the AU community joined the celebration on social media, sharing many wonderful moments.
Stories of inspiration
Every year, the AU community is inspired by the journeys of our graduates. Many have overcome obstacles or made sacrifices at home and work to achieve their dreams. Graduates like Celia Koehler (Master of Business Administration ’23) shared their inspiring stories with us, but also with the rest of the world.
