Athabasca University’s Faculty of Business is proud to present Advancements in Sustainability on Friday, May 26. Join us in person from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT at the DoubleTree West Edmonton hotel alongside leading experts in academia, accounting, and industry who will address the changes and advancements around sustainability efforts in business. Network over provided breakfast, lunch, coffee, and a post-conference reception.

This event is made possible through support from CPA Alberta and Athabasca University.

Speakers

Dr. Tima Bansal, professor at Ivey Business School and the Canada Research Chair in Business Sustainability, will draw on management research and her experience leading Innovation North to discuss how sustainability can be an engine for innovation. It can help businesses launch new products and services that are not only good for the business, but for the planet and society. Dr. Bansal shares her view from academia.

Kent Kaufield, ESG Markets Leader & Chief Sustainability Officer at Ernst & Young, helps companies develop and drive comprehensive ESG strategies, identify emerging opportunities, and adopt innovations and technologies to create long-term value and realize sustainable growth. He will discuss the addition of sustainability reporting requirements in regulatory frameworks, notably the International Sustainability Standards Board’s (ISSB) upcoming release of sustainability-related disclosure standards in mid-2023. Mr. Kaufield shares his view from accounting.

Naseem Bashir is president and CEO of Williams Engineering, a major engineering company with a sustainability goal of reducing, minimizing and, ultimately, eliminating the carbon footprint of buildings. His experience coupled with the sustainable communities goal of Williams Engineering, contribute to his knowledge around applied sustainability at engineering firms, particularly the obstacles they face in a post-pandemic world.

Through Carbonzero’s expertise in quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions associated with attendee travel, food, waste, and utilities, Athabasca University will purchase carbon offsets from Carbonzero’s suite of verified carbon offset projects.
