AUSU Indigenous Student Week: AU Indigenous business—culture, diversity, and sustainability

Simon Brascoupé, Anishinabeg/Haudenosaunee – Bear Clan is the final of 3 events for this year’s Indigenous Student Week by AUSU.
Simon’s presentation, Athabasca University Indigenous Business: Culture, Diversity, and Sustainability, explores how the future of sustainable economies can be found in Indigenous enterprises and communities.
Athabasca University (AU) has a series of business courses of interest to non-Indigenous and Indigenous students to learn about the future of business and social enterprises in North America. Indigenous business courses will explore these possibilities, beginning with INBU 386: Introduction to Indigenous Human Resources, which provides managers with skills in emotional intelligence, problem-solving, and cross-culture relations to improve outcomes.
Other courses will be explored that include Indigenous planning, research, market research and development. These courses prepare students for the future sustainable economy based on Indigenous knowledge, culture and practices.
About the Presenter
Simon Brascoupé, Anishinabeg/Haudenosaunee – Bear Clan is a member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, Maniwaki, Quebec. Simon is an Assistant Professor of Indigenous Business at Athabasca University and a Senior Fellow at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. He is also an Adjunct Research Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies at Trent University. He has a B.A. and M.A. from the State University of New York in Buffalo, where he worked on a Ph.D. Additionally, Simon is a Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) from AFOA Canada and a Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM) from the First Nations Health Manager Association. Previously, Simon was Chief Executive Officer of the National Aboriginal Health Organization, Director of the Primary Health Care Division in the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada, and Director of the Aboriginal Affairs Branch of Environment Canada.
