What if you could get real-world experience before you graduate? What if you had an opportunity to be a part of a team that finds solutions for real business challenges or to learn how to be a more effective trader? With Athabasca University’s Faculty of Business (AU-FB) student competitions—you can!
AU-FB’s student competitions are a rewarding and valuable experience every student should take part in. Participation in any of these competitions will give you an edge when entering the job market, offering exposure to real-world scenarios other job candidates may not have.

So much to gain
“It was a fantastic learning experience, It was great to get to interact with other like-minded individuals on the team. I really enjoyed it and have just signed up for another trading challenge starting in May. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn how markets trade. ”
– Byron Webb, 2019 CME Trading Competition Participant
“… what matters is that our team (myself included) made the most out of this learning opportunity because the knowledge/experience we gain is worth exponentially more than the $10,000 top prize.”
– Aleksandar Golijanin, 2020 Case Competition Participant
The education provided through participating in student competitions is enriching, but it’s not the only benefit to participating … you could also be eligible to gain course credits. There is more information on eligibility on AU-FB’s student competition webpage.

Worth the investment
By participating in a student competition, you will be investing in yourself with your time.
You would be required to attend online bi-weekly meetings with other learners and Faculty of Business experts until the competition dates. There is more information on schedules and time commitment on AU-FB’s student competition webpage.
Live out of town? No problem! The CME Trading Competition is all online, including the practice sessions and competition, and for the Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition and CPA Education Foundation Business Challenge, the biweekly meetings are online with an in-person practice weekend. For the case competitions, AU-FB covers your expenses, including meals, hotel, and travel for the practice and in-person competition days.
Trading competition or case competitions?
There are two different styles of competition that you can be a part of. One is the CME Trading Competition, which all happens online and challenges you with market trading. The Alberta Deans of Business Case Competition and CPA Education Foundation Business Challenge test a range of your skills and acumen by solving a business challenge for an organization, and then presenting your strategy and solutions to the judges.
“It was nice to have that connection with real students; I feel like I really connected with them. I would encourage any current student or future student to take these opportunities as they come and go out of their comfort zone to try something like that.”– Michelle Rose, BComm '21, on her experience on participating in case competitions
