Announcing the new dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Dr. Shawn Fraser
Following a competitive international search, we are excited to announce Dr. Shawn Fraser has been selected as Athabasca University’s (AU) Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Shawn brings a deep commitment to enhancing quality graduate program delivery and a passion for reimagining what graduate education looks like, how it can contribute to society, and how it can be delivered.
Currently a Professor of Health Studies and Interim Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at AU, Shawn has served as a faculty member in the Centre for Nursing and Health Studies since joining Athabasca University in 2006. He previously served as the MHS/MN Graduate Program Director (2010-2014), the Acting Dean of FGS (2014), Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning for the Faculty of Health Disciplines, and has served as the Interim Dean in the Faculty of Graduate Studies since 2018.
Shawn has a lengthy and distinguished record of service to AU and a strong record of interdisciplinary research. He holds degrees from the University of Regina (BSc, Math), the University of Saskatchewan (MSc, Kinesiology) and the University of Alberta (PhD, Physical Education & Recreation). His main area of research involves understanding the health behaviours of cardiac rehabilitation patients.
He is also involved with research in teaching and learning for health professionals and belongs to the learning analytics research group at AU. In his spare time, he maintains a statistics blog which aims to make statistics accessible to all.
