In memoriam
The Athabasca University community is saddened by the passing of Sarah Mann, an alum and colleague of the university. She passed away on March 17, 2023.
Mann started her journey at AU in 2012 as a research assistant while studying in the Master of Arts Interdisciplinary Studies program. She received the Future Alumni award in 2014 and was the first student to receive AU’s Barbara Roberts Memorial Award 2 times. After graduating from AU, she was a PhD candidate at Laurentian University where she focused on developing research methods to better meet the needs and goals of marginalized research participants.
Most recently, she was a tutor at AU and tutored LBST 415: Sex Work and Sex Workers. Dr. Bob Barnetson, a professor of labour relations and course coordinator of LBST 415, remembers Mann for her strength and sense of humour.
“Sarah’s strength as a course author and a teacher was her foregrounding of sex workers’ diverse experiences and her emphasis on their agency. This perspective allows students to best understand how law and policy affect sex workers and shape the dynamics and outcomes of sex work in Canada,” he said. “She was also hilarious.”
Our sincere condolences go out to her family, friends, colleagues, and the community members she served.
