Trigger warning: residential schools, death

Athabasca University (AU) Elder in Residence Maria Campbell and Métis Elder Terry Lusty (Honorary Doctor of Laws ’21) reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in this special recording facilitated by Nukskahtowin.

During the hour-long discussion, Lusty shares personal stories of his experiences as a residential school survivor. Campbell reads a story called “Jacob.”

Lusty and Campbell also answer questions submitted by members of the community, including how non-Indigenous people can support calls to action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, and how to help young Métis struggling with issues of identity.

They also reflect on how to teach children about residential schools, uncovered graves of former students, and reconciliation.
