It took some changing and adapting to become the university we are today—the university that serves so many unique learners like you; the university that is grateful to share in a part of your transformational story.
Athabasca University is Canada’s Online University.
Although we’ve adapted, we’ve never strayed from our mission to be open and flexible, and to remove barriers that enable all types of learners to gain access to post-secondary education.
Way back when
June 25th is a big day for us. Athabasca University was established by Order in Council by the Government of Alberta on June 25, 1970.
We’ve come a long way.
From distance education delivered through the mail to digital online delivery available to all types of learners on their terms, anytime, anywhere. And AU continues to redefine the post-secondary learning landscape—offering 950 online courses to more than 43,000 learners from every Canadian province and territory and 87 countries worldwide.

In celebration of this half century milestone, three AU locations in Alberta (Athabasca, Calgary, and Edmonton) will light the night sky on June 25th in honour of our 50th anniversary—in honour of our incredible alumni, current- and future-learners.
