AUGO captures footage of surprise meteor streak

When a meteor streaks across the sky, it’s helpful to have a camera pointed up! Fortunately, the Athabasca University Geophysical Observatory (AUGO) has just such a thing.

At 6:23 a.m., early risers reported seeing the bright flash of a meteor near Edmonton, Alta. The story, and the video from AUGO, were featured in both the Edmonton Journal and CBC News!

Observatory researcher Ian Schofield told The Journal the meteor could have weighed as much as 100 kilograms—although he doesn’t hold out much hope of finding any of the pieces in the vast boreal forests of northern Alberta.
