AU professor and Asian Gold Ribbon Campaign founder Dr. Gina Wong on why we must all unite against racism
For Lunar New Year, Dr. Gina Wong wants to celebrate “the fierceness, tenacity, and beauty” of Asian cultures while taking a stand against anti-Asian racism.
Wong, a professor in Athabasca University’s Faculty of Health Disciplines, has helped launch a new educational video about Lunar New Year traditions, while also drawing attention to a surge in anti-Asian racism. Wong co-narrated the video for Asian Gold Ribbon, a campaign she founded to take a stand against racism directed at Asian communities.
“Bold and systematic action for systemic change is needed to disrupt the current narrative,” says Wong in the video. “We must stand together, speak out, and be seen.”
Lunar New Year starts Feb. 1.
