Jordan Van Den Brink: Online learning helps pilot reach new heights

By: Jordan Van Den Brink

Transforming Lives: Learners at AU is a testimonial series written by Athabasca University (AU) learners and alumni who want to share how AU has helped shape their lives.

It’s a space to thank the people who provided help and support along the journey, and to share insight on how learning at AU has transformed their lives, careers, families, and communities.

These stories are worth shouting from the rooftops! Do you have an inspiring story to share? Email us! We’d love to hear it.

I am a Bachelor of General Studies student with plans to graduate in March 2022.

I started my undergraduate degree when the pandemic began, and I found myself unemployed in the aviation industry. Working as a pilot meant dealing with a varying schedule and often travelling far from home.

Up until the pandemic, I lived and breathed aviation and felt lost when it came to a sudden stop. I was hesitant to pursue further education, however the flexibility offered at Athabasca University (AU) allows me to study from anywhere, at any time. I can also pay for courses one at a time, when I can afford them.

When I reflect on my decision to pursue a university education, I am extremely grateful and appreciate the people in my life who have supported me along the way. I pursued flying at the age of 16. I traded all my paycheques for flight lessons and managed to attain a pilot’s licence before I could drive legally.

Mentor recommends AU

I had never thought it would be possible to fly an airplane until my aviation mentor came along. He supported and encouraged me for over 10 years and was the one who recommended AU because he enjoyed his experience as a past student. He has been incredibly encouraging not only throughout my flight training, but also during my online university experience. I would not be where I am today without his support and inspiration, and for that I am forever grateful.

Although my studies at AU do not relate to flying, my newly acquired skills are already providing new opportunities. My courses are focused on marketing, which I hope to combine with my passion for aviation in the future.

I am excited to achieve my goals and provide mentorship and support for others as I have been incredibly blessed with along my journey!
