How I pursued an online Master of Nursing degree from the Caribbean

In 2020, the infamous year the COVID-19 pandemic started, my partner had the opportunity to accept a one-year work contract in the Caribbean. I decided to join him for the learning opportunities and experience that this would provide.
While the thought of lazing around on a tropical island seemed like paradise, being locked down away from familiar routines and without a work visa was challenging. I took the opportunity to finally apply for the Master of Nursing program at Athabasca University.
Pursuing a master’s at a distance
I have always loved learning and growing my skills. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a bachelor of science in nursing in 2009 and obtained diabetes educator certification in 2016. After my bachelor’s degree, I always thought I would pursue a master’s degree, but now the timing finally felt right.

Time for study, travel, volunteering
Due to travel restrictions and an extension to my partner’s contract, we have been in the Caribbean for almost 3 years. In addition to my AU studies, I have been able to travel, volunteer in the community, and have worked at learning Spanish. I would not have had these opportunities while completing graduate studies without the support and organization of Athabasca University.

I am now in the last semester of the program. I look forward to moving back to Alberta in a few months to pursue the greater opportunities that will be open to me with a Master of Nursing degree. I have chosen to focus on education and leadership specialties so that I can support health-care workers and the health-care system now and into the future.
