Meet the Class of 2023’s Karastin Michalycia (Masters of Business Administration '23), a leader in hockey management who pursued her MBA through #AthabascaU.

Balancing work and family, MIchalycia found the flexibility of online learning invaluable, as she changed jobs and relocated to a different province. Her dedication led to being hired by the Winnipeg Jets, fulfilling a longtime goal of working professionally in hockey.

Michalycia's advice for future #AthabascaU students? You will take from this experience what you put in. Build connections and participate fully, leaning on others when you need to.

“I love being able to show my kids that I am resilient and strong and still have so much to learn in life. With a new career, I can support them in their dreams as well as my own."

At 36, Shannon Gingras (Bachelor of Arts, Major in English ’23) was struggling to recover from cancer. She was finishing radiation treatments and healing from surgery, all while raising 2 children on her own. With all of that on her plate, she still found it within herself to aim higher, for herself and her family.

Athabasca University provided flexibility so that Gingras could pace her courses according to her family schedule and treatment. She now has an English degree and is working on a second with aims of becoming a teacher.
