Registered nurse Jennifer Kirk used the pandemic as an opportunity to begin a Master of Nursing degree at AU while studying from abroad. Nearly about to graduate, she’s ready to move back to Alberta and support health-care workers and the health system.

#AthabascaU teaches more undergraduate nursing students and nurse practitioners than any other institution in Canada. Through enhanced partnerships with the provincial government, AU can play a larger role in training nurses across rural Alberta. Online learning allowed Chantelle Gray to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner without leaving her home in Grande Prairie.

“I wanted to prove that I was smart, that I was capable, that I earned my spot here. I don't think that pressure exists for everyone in the same way. Other people could just show up and do what they wanted. I couldn’t.”

Research on the experiences of Black nursing students is few and far between in Canada, according to Master of Nursing graduate Kimberley Jones. To help change that, Jones is using her voice to advocate for more visibility of Black nursing students.
